Memory Palace (2026) #

Memory Palace, an arcade cabinet made of OSB panels, standing alone in the center of the Main Gallery at CalArts

Memory Palace in the Main Gallery at CalArts

Memory Palace was my graduate thesis project for the MFA in Art & Technology at CalArts. It's a classic arcade cabinet, fabricated out of cheap construction wood panels, with a fully functioning screen, arcade joystick, and buttons. It sits, starkly and singularly, in the center of the Main Gallery at CalArts.

When you step up to the cabinet, the game begins in a meticulous 3D reconstruction of the same room the cabinet is standing in. You can explore the space and interact with an exhibit of 3D sculptures that reveal information about the ancient mnemonic technique of the memory palace, along with some of my personal anecdotes. Keep exploring, and certain passages lead to new, unexpected venues: recreations of classic 3D video games from my childhood.

Play it on itch.io

The game is a free download for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Intent #

Struggling with anxiety related to memory loss and a family history of dementia, I wanted to create a piece that explores the concept of a memory palace. While researching the project, I read Mark Fisher's Ghosts of My Life, which inspired a new direction for the project; excerpts of his writing are found throughout the game.
